Job Description

Overview Are you ready to defend the homeland? Launch an impactful career as a Criminal Investigator with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) at ICE. This role requires no college degree and offers up to $50,000 in signing and retention bonuses. Duties Conduct and coordinate high-level comprehensive investigations involving individuals, groups, or large organizations operating at a local, national, or international level. Use electronic surveillance, interviews, polygraph examination, and physical surveillance to obtain evidence in investigative cases. Make arrests, confront multiple suspects, and secure scenes sometimes under potentially dangerous and hazardous environments. Take part in securing signed statements, affidavits, and documentary evidence for inclusion in reports or case records. Prepare sworn testimony on behalf of the government in criminal and federal grand jury cases. Organizational Location These positions are located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations at multiple duty locations throughout the country. These are non-bargaining unit positions. Announcement Details This is an open continuous announcement until 12/31/2025. The initial cut-off date for qualified applicants will be 10/03/2025. Additional cut-off dates will be established as needed by the agency. Salary and Benefits The salary range indicated reflects the lowest and highest potential salaries for this position. The actual salary range will be based on locality pay for the selected duty location. Other Required Assessments and Conditions Suitability: If offered employment, you must complete a Declaration for Federal Employment (OF 306) and attest to the accuracy of your information. False statements may lead to withdrawal of offer or dismissal. Drug Testing: Random drug testing applies; pre-employment and post-offer testing may be required. Background Investigation: Top Secret clearance may be required; background checks and polygraph may be part of the process. Mobility and Physical Fitness: Mobility agreements and a Fitness Test are required; you must maintain physical ability for the job and be willing to relocate within 50 miles of duty location. Patrol and Safety: The law enforcement profession carries inherent risks; firearms may be required; you may work nights or remote areas. Requirements and Qualifications Qualification requirements must be met by the date of application submission. You must be a U.S. citizen. Males born after 12/31/59 must certify Selective Service registration. You must pass a background investigation (which may include a polygraph) and a pre-employment medical examination. A pre-employment drug test is required. A one-year probationary period applies upon appointment. You must sign a Mobility Agreement. You must be able to carry a firearm and testify in court. You will need a valid driver’s license prior to final offer. You must live within 50 miles of duty location. ICE may require Basic Training (FLETC CITP and HSISAT) and successful completion of a Physical Fitness Test (PFT). Education and Experience You qualify for the GL-9 grade level with one of the following: one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent; or a master’s degree (or equivalent) or two academic years of progressively higher graduate education; or a combination of education and experience that meets 100% of the requirement. Education must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be evaluated for equivalency where applicable.
