Head of Audience

Hey! We're The Rundown, the world's largest AI community. We inform millions of people around the world about everything going on in AI, why it actually matters, and how you can apply it to your work and life.

Since launching in January 2023, our flagship daily newsletter and social media channels engage with millions of people each day, and our AI University gets hands-on and educates thousands of members how to use the tools that are quickly becoming a part of daily work.

About the role

As Head of Audience at The Rundown, youll own the quality, trust, and editorial direction across all of our media properties (newsletters, socials, and shows). This is a high-accountability role for someone who can set a world-class bar, move fast, and use data to make the content sharper every single day.

You will also help build the system that makes our content compound and more valuable to our readers: audience segmentation, daily feedback loops, engagement optimization, and editorial flywheels that improve distribution and retention across the entire ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the editorial vision and quality bar across all media properties (newsletters, socials, shows)
  • Build and enforce clear editorial standards: voice, style, sourcing, fact-checking, and corrections
  • Segment audience data and deliver daily feedback that improves growth + engagement across all properties
  • Drive engagement improvements (open rate, CTR, retention, watch time, replies) through testing + iteration
  • Partner with Growth + Lifecycle to improve welcome flows, landing pages, funnel content, and conversion
  • Oversee email deliverability inputs that editorial controls (linking practices, content mix, reader trust signals)
  • Build and run organic flywheel strategies across newsletter social shows AI University
  • Manage and coach editors/writers/contractors, hire as needed and ruthlessly raise the bar
  • Report weekly performance (what changed, what worked, whats next) with clear action items

Our ideal candidate

  • Has 3-5+ years of experience in editorial leadership (newsletter/media strongly preferred)
  • Has elite taste and can make content more insightful, more practical, and more trusted (not hype)
  • Data-literate: can use audience segmentation + performance metrics to make decisions daily
  • Understands how media growth works: hooks, distribution, retention, compounding loops
  • Can move fast without shipping slop -- you have high standards and strong judgment
  • Strong operator: systems thinker, great communicator, ruthless about documentation and follow-through
  • Lives and breathes AI and can separate signal from noise
