Job Description

WE ARE HIRING!

Government Relations and Policy Advisor – Help Shape the Future of Public Transit Policy in Canada

Location: Toronto (Hybrid)

About CUTA

The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) is the national voice for public transit and urban mobility in Canada. Our members include transit systems, government agencies, and industry partners from across the country. As a not-for-profit association, we work to strengthen transit through advocacy, policy, and member support. From securing transit funding to shaping national policy, CUTA is a catalyst for change in communities across Canada.

Why This Role Matters

As Government Relations and Policy Advisor, you’ll help shape the future of public transit policy in Canada. Based in Toronto and reporting to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, you will lead policy analysis and advocacy efforts that drive real change. This is your opportunity to influence national and provincial policies, secure funding for transit systems, and support initiatives that improve mobility, affordability, and quality of life in communities across the country.

What You’ll Do

Policy and Advocacy

  • Support the development and execution of CUTA’s government relations strategy at the federal and provincial levels.
  • Monitor and analyze legislation, policy developments, and government programs related to transit, infrastructure, and urban mobility.
  • Draft briefing notes, policy submissions, position papers, and speaking points for senior leadership.
  • Conduct research and contribute to transit-related reports, surveys, and presentations.
  • Track funding announcements and relevant federal/provincial programs that affect transit systems and industry partners.
  • Develop public-facing advocacy materials, including issue papers and web content.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, public servants, political staff, and advocacy partners.
  • Coordinate meetings, stakeholder outreach, and advocacy campaigns with internal teams and CUTA members.
  • Organize and support CUTA’s annual Lobby Day and other advocacy events.

Member Support and Communications

  • Support advocacy efforts for the Ontario Public Transit Association (OPTA), working closely with its CEO and Board.
  • Act as staff liaison for CUTA committees.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of CUTA’s national conferences, summits, and policy forums.
  • What You’ll Bring to the Role

    • 2–3 years of experience in government relations, public policy, or a related role, ideally with exposure to federal or provincial government departments or agencies.
    • A degree or diploma in political science, public policy, or a related field.
    • Strong writing, research, and communication skills.
    • Familiarity with the policymaking process and strategic advocacy.
    • Knowledge of public transit or urban mobility issues is an asset.
    • Experience working with member-based or non-profit organizations is an advantage.
    • French language is an asset.

    Why Join CUTA?

CUTA offers the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that impact how Canadians move, live, and connect. You’ll join a small but passionate team that collaborates with transit systems of all sizes, from major metropolitan agencies to rural operators. We offer a hybrid work environment, a supportive and inclusive culture, and a chance to help shape the transit policies of tomorrow.

    How to Apply

Interested? Please send your resume and a brief note telling us why you’d be a great addition to the CUTA team to hr@cutaactu.ca by May 31, 2025

Our Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusion

CUTA is committed to fostering an inclusive, barrier-free, and accessible workplace. If you require accommodation during the recruitment process, we will work with you to meet your needs.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals in equity-seeking groups, including women, racialized and visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, persons living with disabilities, and individuals identifying as LGBTQ+.
