Job Description

Overview Non-Tenure Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics (Director of Academic Integration/Applied Linguistics) at Penn State Abington seeks a committed and energetic scholar-administrator to lead initiatives for our multilingual student population, including Academic Integration Courses (AIC) and the Applied Linguistics programs (TESOL minor and ESL Specialist Certificate). The successful candidate will direct the AIC program, coordinate with AIC's teaching and administrative partners, manage placement of new students, support and mentor faculty, and teach one course per semester. The department prefers a candidate with experience teaching college composition for English language learners and the ability to teach courses in theory, methodology, and praxis in second language acquisition. The candidate will pursue a research agenda related to teaching and learning of languages in academic contexts, administration of academic programs, or language policy in education. About half of our 4,000 students enroll in BA and BS programs at Abington, while the rest complete their degrees at University Park. The College strongly supports first-generation, minority, and multilingual students who make up more than half of the student body. Responsibilities Direct the Academic Integration Courses (AIC) program and coordinate with AIC's teaching and administrative partners. Manage placement of new students. Support and mentor faculty. Teach one course per semester. Qualifications Master’s degree in TESOL or equivalent; Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics or a cognate area preferred. Experience teaching college composition for English language learners. Ability to teach courses in theory, methodology, and praxis in second language acquisition. Record of pursuing research related to teaching and learning languages in academic contexts, administration of academic programs, or language policy in education. Appointment Details This is a non-tenure line position with a 48-week contract. It is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
