We are seeking a qualified and passionate Remote Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpretation services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a K12 educational setting inNew Mexico . This fully remote role is vital in ensuring students have equal access to instruction, classroom participation, and school activities. The interpreter will use American Sign Language (ASL) and other munication modalities as appropriate to facilitate real-time munication between students, educators, service providers, and families.
Key Responsibilities:Provide live ASL interpretation during virtual classroom instruction, group work, school assemblies, and one-on-one student meetings.
Interpret expressively and receptively between ASL and spoken English, conveying meaning, tone, and intent with accuracy.
Support students IEPs and Section 504 Plans , ensuring legal and instructional pliance.
Collaborate with general and special education staff, related service providers (e.g., SLPs), and administrators.
Prepare for interpreting sessions by reviewing lesson materials and attending virtual planning meetings as needed.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in pliance with FERPA , state, and district guidelines.
Educate school staff about Deaf culture and promote inclusive munication strategies.
Support the use of assistive technology tools such as captioning services, video relay, or amplification systems.
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
Certification through one of the following:
EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score of 3.5 or higher
RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) Certification (NIC, CI/CT, or CDI)
BEI (Board for Evaluation of Interpreters) Certification
Must meet New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) standards for educational interpreters
High school diploma or GED required (Associate or Bachelors degree preferred)
At least 1 year of experience interpreting for school-age children
Stable internet connection and access to a quiet, confidential remote workspace
Preferred:Experience with virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet)
Familiarity with IEP processes and educational acmodations
Strong understanding of Deaf culture , inclusive practices, and accessibility tools
Background in K12 education , particularly in special education or remote learning
Technology Requirements:Reliable high-speed internet
Updated puter or laptop with webcam and microphone
Familiarity with secure online learning platforms and interpreting software
Willingness to be trained on district-specific tools and systems
