This position is a member of the Street Department which is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City roads and rights-of-way; maintenance and repair of drainage located on City property; installation and maintenance of signs and roadway markings; and removal of snow and ice. Employees operate, maintain, and repair various machinery, power and hand tools, and equipment daily. Good communications skills are required as this position frequently deals directly with the public. The primary hours of this position are Monday through Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm; however, extended shifts and overtime on weekends, evenings, and holidays are required. A CDL License must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

Successful candidates must establish residency within a 15-mile radius of Collinsville City Hall, within twelve (12) months of hire date. This is a union position with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 520C.

• Performs maintenance and repairs to City streets.
• Operates various equipment as assigned such as backhoes; dump trucks; street sweepers; motor graders; compactors; skid steers; etc....
• Repairs storm sewer drainage; installs new storm sewers. Uses jet truck to flush blocked storm sewers, uses backhoe to excavate, backfill, and handle material.
• Cuts brush and weeds throughout City using boom mower, brush hog, and various small equipment and tools.
• Removes limbs and/or trees on City right-of-way; disposes of trees and limbs by hauling in dump truck.
• Monitors City right-of-way, picking up litter, garbage, etc. Uses street sweeper to clean streets as assigned; assists in spraying herbicides, as assigned.
• Performs snow removal on an emergency call out basis. Uses backhoe and loader to load trucks with salt, deicer and other chemicals; dump truck to spread chemicals; dump truck with plow for removal of snow and ice.
• Installs and repairs traffic control signs and street signs; repairs guard rails as needed. Repairs and replaces concrete curbing; installs, repairs and replaces sidewalks; repairs and replaces driveway aprons.
• Participates on emergency call-out list which is in effect 24 hours a day for emergencies such as storm debris clearing, snow and ice removal operations, damaged traffic control signs, etc.
• Performs necessary maintenance at street garage, clean up and repair, including general landscaping, painting, maintaining and repairing various equipment, machinery and tools.
• Other duties as assigned by the working foreman or director.

High school diploma or equivalent is required and the following experience and/or education/training is preferred:

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in road construction or related field, experience with heavy equipment, education in construction practices, civil or mechanical engineering or technology; previous water distribution system experience, water main/sewer installation or maintenance/plumbing experience; general electrical experience/training.
• An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
• Valid driver's license required with a clean driving record.
• CDL license required within 90 days of hire.

This is an extremely physical position that requires above average physical ability, both to complete the essential duties of the position and to ensure the safety and welfare of employees.

Walking, standing, stooping, and lifting of various material and equipment over 50 lbs. is required daily. Climbing onto/into and off/out of equipment is required daily, as well as climbing into and out of excavations, trenches, ditches, etc. Crouching and bending are required in the everyday performance of the essential duties of the position.

Must have sufficient physical strength and ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing up to eighty (80) pounds and to repeatedly lift, move, and carry objects weighing more than eighty (80) pounds with assistance.

Must be able to report for work on time and to perform the duties of the job for the entire workday. Must be able to work flexible hours with some weekend, evening, and holiday work required. Must be able to perform frequent overtime work which may involve late night or early morning hours.

Must be able to endure all kinds of weather, from extreme cold/freezing temperatures, snow, and frozen conditions to extreme heat, humidity, rain, etc. Laborers can be exposed to a variety of other irritants including bees, wasps, spiders, and other insects, snakes, poison oak/ivy, and sumac.

The rate of pay for this position is $31.39/hr.
